How to Paint Kitchen Countertops | Instructions

  1. Clear off the countertop and clean it using a cleaner fluid. Then let it dry in air.
  2. After the countertop has dried up, sand the surface lightly. Use a 150 grit sandpaper to roughen up the area. Carefully sand the corners and elbows of the laminate so that no area is left non-roughened.
  3. Clean the countertops by wiping with a dry rag, and wipe off any leftover dust and debris from the countertop. Any left behind dust can cause air bubbles and holes and make your painting job to be of substandard quality. So it is very important to carefully wipe off any excess dust particles from the countertops.
  4. Apply masking tape on the edges and any surrounding area that you don’t want to get the paint on. Be sure to cover the sink and other appliances and sockets with a plastic drop cloth and tape off the edges. It would be extremely good to cover any lower cabinets that you don’t want to paint with plastic as well.
  5. Apply a quarter inch thick coat of paint on the counters using your paint brush. Work your way from the top down, extending an even amount of paint on the counter.
  6. Once a thick layer of paint has been put on the counters, you can begin to paint the surface of your countertop with the roller. The smooth paint will allow your roller to glide seamlessly onto the countertops. Roll with long, continuous strokes starting from the back of the counter and going all the way down to the front ledge. Let the paint dry for about an hour and then add another coat. Apply 3-4 coats of paint for the vibrant colors to pop out.
  7. Using a utility knife, score the edges of the taped parts prior to removing the tapes. Allow the countertop to cure for 2-3 days for the best finishing and results.
